The sound artist and composer Tristan Perich (New York, 1982) has developed a special post-minimalist aesthetic using 1-bit electronics adapted to diverse formats.In the case of Surface Image, 40-channel 1-bit electronic loudspeakers hand-wired by Perich serve as an electronic orchestra, which, together with a formidable score of changing patterns for the piano, unleash a tour de force lasting one hour in which the boundaries between acoustic instruments and electronics in a musical happening are blurred.
The influence and simplicity of the code in the sequential conception of the composition force a language that is subject to the logic of electronic music onto the piano which, notwithstanding this, does not disregard the dynamic and timbric potential of the acoustic instrument, but rather uses it to explore the mutual noise pollution generated by the contact between two soundworlds that fuse in unexpected ways. The Canadian pianist Vicky Chow performs Surface Image, to whom the work is dedicated and who is a member of the influential New York collective Bang on a Can All-Stars.
