Program
The most popular piano work of the 20th century by one of the most important pianists of the time, under the direction of Diego Martín-Etxebarría, a conductor trained at the ESMUC (Catalonia College of Music) who has recently triumphed in Japan. All the necessary elements are there to make this concert a must, with Tchaikovsky’s most personal symphony.Tchaikovsky had already achieved major successes with his concerto overtures and symphonies but he wanted to write something more intense, more personal, more committed, so he wrote the Fifth Symphony, a reflection on fate, with the energy and colour typical of his musical language. Vadym Kholodenko is the most prominent Ukrainian pianist of the moment. He brings us his version of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, an example of balance between virtuosity, romanticism and popularity. Opening the programme is the work by Aragonese composer Jesús Torres that this year will be performed by all the Spanish orchestras, inspired by three paintings by Velázquez: Venus at her Mirror, Christ Crucified and The Triumph of Bacchus.
