    Program

In 1994, at the age of 22, Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky was winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition. Twenty-five years later, Lugansky is now one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation. During his professional career he has collaborated with leading orchestras and conductors and offers recitals at major auditoriums around the world.
Lugansky will conclude his concert with Piano Sonata in A major, op. 101, by Ludwig van Beethoven, and thus join the L’Auditori in paying tribute to one of the most admired and influential composers of classical music on the 250th anniversary of his birth. This influence can be perceived in this sonata which, seen in perspective, extends its tentacles into the music of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann. The concert repertoire also includes Prélude, Choral et Fugue by César Franck, one of the most interesting works in the French literature for piano of the 19th century; Sonata No. 3 by Alexander Scriabin, that he himself subtitled States of the Soul and which shows hints of the atonal language that would make him famous; and a selection of Preludes, op. 23, by Sergei Rachmaninoff, little gems that encapsulate the composer’s lyrical passion.
