Next weekend, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra season will offer the fifth concert of the season with theStabat Mater, the great oratory by Gioachino Antonio Rossini, and also the performance of Symphony No. 25 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini, born in Rome and one of the leading figures of historicist music, will direct the OBC and the Cor Madrigal to bring us a truthful rendition of this piece. Joining them will be several of the most captivating soloists on the current scene, such as tenor Enea Scala, one of the most sought-after performers of Rossini’s roles in the world who is making his debut in Barcelona, the highly-acclaimed bass Riccardo Zanellato, mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland and the Catalan soprano Marta Mathéu.
Rossini wrote his Stabat Mater in Madrid, where it premiered in 1833. Subsequently, the composer from Pesaro revised it and it was presented in its definitive version in 1842 in Paris. The praise received was unanimous, both for the elegance of the piece and his absolute mastery of vocal writing.
Rinaldo Alessandrini will complete the programme with a symphony from Mozart’s youth, Symphony No. 25, written at a time when he was looking for work in Italy and always carried new material around with him under his arm: it is a work by a young man who had his entire life ahead of him.
