Next weekend, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra season will offer the ‎fifth concert of the season with theStabat Mater, the great ‎oratory by Gioachino Antonio Rossini, and also the performance of ‎‎Symphony No. 25 by Wolfgang Amadeus ‎Mozart. ‎

The conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini, born in Rome and one of the leading ‎figures of historicist music, will direct the OBC and the Cor ‎Madrigal to bring us a truthful rendition of this piece. Joining them will be several of ‎the most captivating soloists on the current scene, such as tenor Enea ‎Scala, one of the most sought-after performers of Rossini’s roles in the world who ‎is making his debut in Barcelona, the highly-acclaimed bass Riccardo ‎Zanellato, mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate ‎‎Kielland and the Catalan soprano Marta Mathéu. ‎

Rossini wrote his Stabat Mater in Madrid, where it premiered in 1833. ‎Subsequently, the composer from Pesaro revised it and it was presented in its definitive ‎version in 1842 in Paris. The praise received was unanimous, both for the elegance of the ‎piece and his absolute mastery of vocal writing.‎

Rinaldo Alessandrini will complete the programme with a symphony from Mozart’s youth, ‎Symphony No. 25, written at a time when he was looking for work in Italy and always carried ‎new material around with him under his arm: it is a work by a young man who had his entire ‎life ahead of him.‎
