L’Auditori de Barcelona is getting ready to open the 2021-22 season with a cross-cutting programme that includes all music genres and which, with Love and Hate as the main theme, puts the focus on the great international composers, new creations and the development of L’Auditori’s permanent ensembles: the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and the Barcelona Symphony Band.
The OBC will open the season on Friday 17 September accompanied by cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and under the baton of Duncan Ward. One of the highlights of the programme will be the performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto and the world premiere of U, by Bernat Vivancos, this season’s guest composer. The concert will be completed by the work that gives its name to the programme, a selection of pieces from Romeo and Juliet, by Prokofiev.
After performing its traditional concerts for the city in September and October, the Symphony Band will begin its season on 24 October with a programme centred around El amor brujo (Love, the Magician), by Manuel de Falla, which will be conducted by José R. Pascual-Vilaplana and will feature singer Esperanza Fernández.
On 17 September, the day the OBC season is launched, audiences will have a chance to see the first performance of Pairidaeza, which had to be postponed in the summer. The show forms part of the Escenes cycle and is jointly produced by L’Auditori and the Grec Festival, with direction by Marina Herlop.
Jordi Savall, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year, will kick off the Música Antiga season by continuing with his highly successful direction of Beethoven’s symphonic cycle. On 7 October it will be the turn of the Sixth and Seventh symphonies.
The Chamber Music season will open with a strong commitment to Catalan musical heritage and the performance of vocal works by Robert Gerhard , featuring soprano María Hinojosa and mezzo-soprano Anna Alàs i Jové. This concert is linked to a record project involving L’Auditori, which we will talk more about soon.
On 21 October the Sit Back cycle gets underway with indie folk heavyweights Kings of Convenience who will fill Sala 1, Pau Casals in this sold out concert.
In terms of capacity capacity, L’Auditori de Barcelona will continue to ensure the well-being of audiences and performers and will maintain the safety measures established by the competent authorities. As from September, L’Auditori will increase its capacity to 70% in its four halls.
