Ferran Carvajal dirigeix Història del soldat de Stravinski, nova producció de L’Auditori i el Teatro Real de Madrid

07-Jun-2019 – Aleix Palau

‎The Soldier’s Tale ‏is a staged music piece that Igor Stravinsky created based on ‎a ‎text by ‎Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. The work was conceived in‏ ‏‎1917 while he was exiled ‎in ‎Switzerland during the Great War, and was devised for a small group of performers so it ‎could ‎easily be taken on tour like a small circus troupe. After Stravinsky’s great ballets, this ‎was to be a ‎forerunner of his neoclassical works such as ‎Pulcinella. Stravinsky explained that ‎his musical ‎ideas usually came to him whilst he was working, but this wasn’t the case with ‎the ‎The ‎Soldier’s Tale‏‎, where they came to him in dreams and he was very ‎pleased to be able to ‎remember them. ‎

‎The Soldier’s Tale‎‏‎, a Faustian tale par excellence, sees a soldier on leave making ‎a ‎critical choice: to sell his soul, represented by his violin, in exchange for a magic book that ‎would ‎allow him to know the future and become rich.‎‏ ‏A moral tale is spun around this ‎terrible ‎exchange that resonates strongly with our “always more” obsession in a society that ‎has ‎rendered us insatiable and where temptation is all around.‎

In this version, given a decidedly contemporary interpretation, three performers – dancers ‎and actors – give body and voice to the characters of this work. ‎‎ The Soldier’s Tale is ‎presented as the dream of a woman who finds herself facing a critical dilemma in her life. Her ‎therapist guides her in analysing a recurring dream where she is a soldier, to enable her to ‎confront her demons.‎
