L’Auditori de Barcelona kicked off its autumn season a month ago with the Barcelona Quartet Biennale. An event that was the prelude to a season that is firmly committed to local talent and musical performances from the Catalan musical heritage of all periods.

This weekend the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra takes part in the commemoration of the centenary of the Pau Casals Orchestra, the orchestra which was the forefather to the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. And it will do so under the youthful baton of someone who is quite a sensation, the Portuguese conductor: Nuno Coelho, latest winner of the Cadaqués International Competition of Orchestral Conductors. Coelho will make his debut with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra conducting a repertoire that recreates a programme performed by the Casals orchestra, comprising of The Pastoral Symphony by Beethoven and Transfigured Night by Schoenberg.


Next Sunday, the 18th will be the the first concert for the Barcelona Symphony Band, as part of the L’Auditori’s autumn season. The programme, conducted by José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana, band leader, will be entirely dedicated to Catalan music, with the recovery of works by composers Carles Suriñach and Miquel Asins Arbó. The world premiere of Tres al·lusions a l’abisme (Three Allusions to the Abyss) by the Barcelona local, Ximo Tarín will be performed by the brass quartet Tetra Brass Bcn Ensemble, whose members also belong to the Barcelona Symphony Band. Also being performed will be two sardanes by Robert Gerhard.

On Saturday 17, with all tickets sold out, the singer and composer from Barcelona,Nico Roig will perform his first concert of the season Sit Back where he’ll perform the songs from his latest album. Yo siempre sueño que sí, songs which move between the ethereal and the emotional. An immersive concert with binaural sound will also be performed for a small, privileged audience who will form part of this journey.


These three events add to other great moments experienced in recent weeks at L’Auditori with concerts by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, who have had figures like the violinist Maria Florea, (from Esparreguera) and the conductor, Edmon Colomer, and music by two great composers from the past and the present: Carles Baguer and Jordi Cervelló. Cervelló’s work was heard at the Barcelona International Quartet Biennale, which was the initiative of the Cuarteto Casals as well as some in-house ensembles such as the Dalia and Cosmos quartets. Amongst the performed pieces, premieres were enjoyed from Josep Soler and Luis Codera and from a quartet featuring Raquel García-Tomás, who recently received the 2020 National Music Award.

In the field of new creations, Monday 12 October was the date of the first Sampler Sèries of the season with the premiere of White, a piece commissioned by L’Auditori de Barcelona, written by the composer, Pablo Carrascos. The piece reinterprets techno music by combining two complementary formats: live electronic music performed by the composer himself, and music performed with acoustic instruments. The piece was performed in collaboration with Frames Percussion and the Barcelona Modern Ensemble.


Tomorrow’s concert by Nico Roig at 9 pm, and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Sunday 18 at 11 am can be seen via streaming on the platform L’Auditori Digital. Additionally, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra’s morning concert can be heardlive on Catalunya Música.


The music never stops at L’Auditori de Barcelona

In view of the new safety measures established by the competent bodies, L’Auditori de Barcelona would like to remind you that our programme will continue as planned, as the legislation issued by the Department of Health does not affect upcoming concerts. We would also like to emphasise that L’Auditori de Barcelona is observing the 50% capacity limit, as well as all other containment measures set forth in the sectoral plans governing the operation of cultural facilities.

Members of the audience must therefore wear face masks at all times, both when entering the building and during the concert. Furthermore, social distancing must be observed in accordance with the health authorities’ instructions, and the lift may only be used by a single person at a time. In addition, no programmes or leaflets will be handed out. Instead, these can be found on the website and using the QR codes displayed throughout L’Auditori, and there will be no cloakroom service. The café and restaurant service will be closed from this weekend, and concerts will be performed without an interval.
