Program

Composed by Helmut Lachenmann (1935, Stuttgart) between 1997 and 1998 and written for ‎his wife, Japanese pianist Yukiko Sugawara, Serynade is considered to be one of ‎the great contemporary piano works. Serynade is a sophisticated exploration of ‎conventional piano sounds, notes and chords are suspended in time using the pedals and ‎depressed keys, opening up a complex world of resonances, a new narrative that is almost ‎ethereal and weightless. At the same time it expresses the essential piano sound, which ‎exists alongside Lachenmann’s new type of melody found in different sections of the ‎virtuoso piano work. This particular version of the serenade reveals unfamiliar music from a ‎seemingly familiar instrument. The programme concludes with Thema mit 840 ‎Variationen (1993/97), by German composer Enno Poppe: an intense, demanding and ‎calculated study composed using small metric units. Neus Estarellas, trained by masters such ‎as Kirill Gerstein and Nicolas Hodges, and based in Stuttgart since 2010, is an outstanding ‎Spanish pianists with a glowing reputation for her performances of new repertoires.‎
