Russian pianist Varvara joins L’Auditori’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven with a performance of two of the composer’s most famous sonatas. In recent years, we have had the honour to get to know Russian pianist Varvara first-hand during her recitals in Barcelona. This year, we have another opportunity to enjoy her art which, according to Markus Hinterhäuser, pianist and artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, “leaves you speechless and makes you forget what instrument is being played.”
Varvara joins L’Auditori’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven with a performance of two of the composer’s most famous sonatas: Sonata No. 14 Moonlight Sonata, in which Beethoven builds a powerful contrast between the contemplative introspection of the first movement Adagio sostenuto and the intensely dramatic final movement, presto, and Sonata No.26 Les Adieux, which recounts moments from the time he was separated from his friend and patron, Archduke Rudolph. Varvara will complete the concert repertoire with Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, which Wagner considered to be of “a beauty beyond any conception.” This is a magnum opus, full of fire and Romantic spontaneity, in which Liszt masterfully combines his innovations in musical language with the classical tradition of the sonata.
