“Russian and original, fiery and chaotic”, that’s how Mussorgsky described Night on Bold Mountain, a classic in the Russian repertoire. By 1860, the composer had begun penning incidental music for Baron Georgiy Mengden’s The Witch, one of his comrades in the army. He resumed it in 1866, but with Gógol’s story as a new narrative basis and in the form of a symphonic poem. From the breakneck pace of the eve of St. John’s day, the concert shifts to the bacchanal that starts with Autumn, the last scene in the ballet, The Seasons, by Glazunov, which premiered at the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1900.

Dues estampes simfòniques (Two Symphonic Scenes), a mature work by the composer Joaquim Serra, closes the concert.
