Program

The Chamber Music Season at L’Auditori de Barcelona invites ‎renowned performers with ties to the Catalan music scene. On this occasion, we have ‎the ]W[ Ensemble, formed of musicians from the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the super-‎orchestra founded by Claudio Abbado. Every summer, for the festival, the Orchestra brings ‎together some of the best musicians of the moment who have an association with the Escola ‎Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC – Catalonia College of Music). For its Barcelona ‎debut, the ]W[ Ensemble offers a performance of quintets for piano and winds by Wolfgang ‎Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, with guest musicians Enrique Bagaría and Júlia ‎Gállego. These two works are linked by the young Beethoven’s admiration of Mozart, from ‎whom he copied the instrumentation, tonality and formal structure, and in which the piano ‎has an almost soloist role, making them short piano concertos. The concert repertoire is ‎completed with the rhapsodic and languid Summer Music, op. 31, the only work ‎for wind quintet composed by American Samuel Barber, and the Sextet for piano and ‎wind quintet, op. 100, by Francis Poulenc, one of his most popular works, full of ‎humour and deeply emotional.‎
