La Traviata is a realistic psychological drama, set entirely indoors. It tells the story of a young man from a bourgeois family who lives with a courtesan, until their relationship is terminated when she becomes ill with tuberculosis. The censorship of the age and the puritanical attitudes of audiences obliged Verdi to transfer the action of the plot to eighteenth-century Paris.
The libretto, by Francesco María Piave (Murano 1810 – Milan 1876), condenses and faithfully follows La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas (fils):
