Programme

This concert is included in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of L’Auditori

The string quartet formed by the maestros of the OBC invites us to visit three highlights of this ensemble’s musical history.

Franz Joseph Haydn, considered the father of the quartet, definitively established the foundations of the genre with String Quartets Op. 20. In his work, Haydn developed compositional techniques that would define the genre for the next 200 years: the relationship of equals between the four instruments, the expansion of texture and the broadening of characters, styles, forms, and themes that the quartet could encompass

Now in the midst of Romanticism, Fanny Mendelssohn wrote her only string quartet and it’s the first one we know of written by a female composer. A piece full of formal audacity and emotional intensity that stands out for its extraordinarily wide expressive range.

Finally, the string trio Spectra by contemporary composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir introduces us to a new sound ecosystem, in which materials continually grow from one another. In Spectra these materials include quarter tones, harmonics, glissandi, tremolos, and several types of vibratos.
