Program
The creation of the ballet Ariel (1934) by Robert Gerhard (1896-1970), winner of the Catalan Government’s Isaac Albéniz Prize in 1935, boasted some illustrious collaborators, such as poet J.V.Foix (script) and artist Joan Miró (sets). Rejected by the recipient of the work, ballet dancer and choreographer Leonid Massine, as the music was too symphonic and its sets too abstract, the ballet was transformed into a concert suite premiered at the SIMC Festival in Barcelona in 1936.
As it has never been performed as a ballet, 75 years after the prize was awarded, the Amics de la Música de Valls are promoting the world premiere of the ballet Ariel, based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This world premiere will see the participation of up to 300 schoolchildren between the ages of six and twelve after having been taught in training sessions in schools in Valls.
A production by the Amics de la Música de Valls, with the collaboration of Valls Town Council, Tarragona Provincial Council and C_RG.
Concert included as part of the Gerhard Programme
