Programme

The cantata BWV 93 Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten (Who Only Lets Dear God Rule), is one of many sacred cantatas composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig in 1724. It was written for the fifth Sunday after Trinity and was intended for St. Thomas church. With this piece, the Bachcelona Festival celebrates the link between the old kantor and Felix Mendelssohn, who rediscovered his work, conducting an almost complete version of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. This event marked the start of the relationship between audiences in the 19th century and music from the past, a model that still exists today.
