Programme

Lully’s Followers in Germany is the programme that El Gran Teatro del Mundo has presented in concert halls, following on from their successful album on the Ambronay Editions label. Despite its eclectic nature, the common theme is the suite, the collection of dances that were so popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in France, strongly influenced by Jean-Baptiste Lully, who was also the father of the tragédie lyrique during the reign of Louis XIV. The programme brings together composers, sensibilities and musical criteria that have much more in common than might be suggested by the obvious discord that exists on paper. It evokes crucial moments in the history of a Europe which, as well as enduring centuries of battles, has also danced through the decades.
