Scientific studies show that Alzheimer’s sufferers respond to musical stimuli, even in the most advanced stages of the condition. They can experience music as something that allows them to enjoy the moment while helping them to connect with their past. Using a person-focused approach, music improves their quality of life. The activity “Un matí d’orquestra a l’Auditori” (An orchestral morning for Alzheimer’s sufferers) gives Alzheimer’s sufferers and their carers three different experiences: a meeting with two students from ESMUC who will give them a live performance, an opportunity to attend part of a rehearsal of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and, finally, a music workshop, where they will make music using a range of instruments.
The activity is designed for people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, their families and carers, and provides an opportunity for them to continue enjoying live music despite their condition. It enables them to take part in a social activity, sharing laughter and emotions and experiencing the evocative power of music, stimulating memories and building connections with their own experiences.
