Program
Mahler lived through a period of profound change in a city, Vienna, where it was very clear that a whole concept of art, life and society was dying, while at the same time another was being born. At that time, Mahler was a leading figure on the Viennese music scene, albeit more on the performing side as a conductor than as a composer, despite younger ones such as Schönberg, Berg and Webern admiring his compositions. To mark the centenary of the composer’s death, this concert allows us to discover the Vienna music scene of the time – known as “the laboratory of modernity” – but also the musical environment of Mahler, with his classic and romantic references and the new paths that music was taking. It is the musical chronicle of a fascinating age.
