Program
Once the hegemonic era of the avant-garde had passed, in Latvia, as in other parts of the former USSR, composers once again recovered the traditional tone and Shostakovich’s traditional, yet modern, style became a true point of reference. This much is evident from the music of Vasks, one of the great figures of contemporary creation from this Baltic country.
And the baton is passed to us by Shostakovich with a symphony about “a people who have lost their faith because too many crimes have been committed”, in the composer’s own words. Curiously enough, the work received the Lenin Prize in 1958, a year after it premiered.
