Program
The great violinist Midori accompanies the OBC as they perform the Brahms concerto. Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Sortilegis, by Montsalvatge, close the programme.Composed in 1992 as a commission of the Conducting Competition of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, Sortilegis by Xavier Montsalvatge is a sophisticated and rousing work. The piece meets the need to force the conductor to be aware of the numerous sound details and rhythm changes in the score and is also highly demanding of the orchestra. The result is a work of a Mediterranean character and one that is extremely attractive. One of the competition winners, Vasily Petrenko, is one of the leading conductors today and he will be leading the OBC in this concert, the very many attractions of which include young Japanese violinist Midori, a bright star who will be performing the impassioned Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Johannes Brahms. With its mysterious theme used to the full by the mastery of its English composer, Elgar’s Enigma Variations complete this enchanting programme.
