Program
Mahler’s 5th, with the famous Adagietto from the film by Visconti, Death in Venice, performed by the OBC, together with the première of a work by Hector Parra. It took decades for this piece by Gustav Mahler to gain public recognition and appreciation due to its creative boldness and innovative nature, which broke the moulds of symphonism that was indebted to Romanticism. Now a classic, his Symphony no. 5 is one of the best known pieces of music, with a famous Adagietto immortalised by Visconti in his film Death in Venice. Héctor Parra is one of the greatest exponents of modern Catalan composition. Proof of this is the extraordinary work that he is undertaking, with numerous public recognitions from Paris’ IRCAM: the acoustic research institute founded by Pierre Boulez, who is also one of staunchest defenders of Mahler’s work. The OBC will be premièring this work by Parra, a musician of today and, perhaps, of the future, whom we should consider getting to know.
