Program

Great OBC Christmas concert with talented pianist Nikolai Demidenko. Performances of the Nutcracker (Suite) and works by Chopin and Satie/Debussy.Erik Satie wrote Les Gymnopédies for piano with a desire to create deliberately insignificant music, a characteristic that he himself defined as musique d’ameublement and which is the dominant feature of background music. Claude Debussy, however, must have viewed these two small gems for the piano quite favourably, as he decided to orchestrate them in the versions that we will be hearing today. And if the Gymnopaedia was a type of dance performed by young Spartans during the Greek period, dance will also be present in this programme with the second act known as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet. A work adapted to Christmas to match the holiday and popular spirit of his music. The finishing touch to the concert will be the performance of Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko, a specialist in the music of Chopin, whose romantic second concerto for piano and orchestra he will be playing.
