The Festival Emergents Barcelona dedicates a day to the string quartet, an iconic chamber music ensemble. The Festival Emergents Barcelona dedicates a day to the string quartet, an iconic chamber music ensemble. This year we have a visit from the Aris Quartett, which was formed in 2009 in Frankfurt and has won major international competitions such as the Joseph Joachim Chamber Music Competition and the ARD International Music Competition. We will also hear the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam, which has an intense concert schedule, performing on the stages of Europe and the United States alongside artists such as Philippe Jaroussky and Kaija Saariaho. The third ensemble is the Esmé Quartet, formed in 2016 by four young Korean musicians who continue to collect awards in the most prestigious European competitions.
The three quartets will offer a repertoire based on German Romanticism: Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet op. 13 and String Quartet op. 80, brilliant and lyrical works that reveal his compositional mastery, and Johannes Brahms meditated String Quartet op. 51 No. 1. Each of these works will be contrasted with a piece from the 20th or 21st century: György Kurtág’s Officium Breve, one of the most original works of the 20th century; György Ligeti’s transcendental String Quartet no. 1 Métamorphoses Nocturnes; and a selection of Bagatelles by the young Dutch composer Peter Vigh.
