José Domínguez “El Cabrero” has been one of the most important names in flamenco over the last 40 years. Only two singers have been described as “social phenomena”, based on their impact on a broad audience spectrum: El Cabrero is one of them. His brilliance, character, personality, outlook and his commitment to singing in its purest form and to issues affecting humanity, made him a unique figure and unrivalled in the world of cante flamenco. His repertoire is rooted in the most challenging flamenco styles, such as the soleá, seguiriya and tonás. His voice is defined by its control, strength, singularity and by his overwhelming personality which drives him to replicate traditionally handed down styles infused with his passionate nature.
El Cabrero started his career in 1972, with La Cuadra de Sevilla, touring in Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland. This success led him, not long after, to perform a series of recitals in Switzerland and France, but this time as a solo artist. His debut was at the Théâtre de l’Atelier in Geneva in March 1973. In 1975 he recorded his first album. In 1980, already enjoying enormous popularity, he won two National Awards in the National Competition of Flamenco Art in Cordoba for Soleá and Malagueña. He is a well-known figure, year on year, in all the major festivals in Andalusia. In the 90s he performed at the World Music and Jazz festivals, on the same bill as artists such as Chick Corea and Gilberto Gil. He featured in Peter Gabriel’s USA/93 tour and he regularly tours the major theatres in France and Belgium and appears on top French and Swiss television shows such as Nulle part ailleurs, Etoiles Palace and Rebus. He grew up herding goats, and El Cabrero still continues this way of life, something he has done since 1980, despite being the most sought after cante flamenco performer of festival organisers and one of the few major international flamenco artists. He has recorded 18 flamenco and two rioplatense tango albums which were warmly and respectfully received by aficionados.
