The documentary “4” gives us an inside look at the functioning of a quartet. It specifically focuses on Quatuor Ébène, one of the most interesting chamber music groups around today. The string quartet is an ensemble par excellence for chamber music. The sound possibilities and the complex dynamics that govern it have resulted in the string quartet being referred to as “the dialogue between four intelligent people” (Goethe) and theories have been established around it, such as that of violinist Cibrán Sierra of the Cuarteto Quiroga, who considers it the “symbol of a society in which difference triumphs as an engine of cohesion.”
The documentary “4”, directed by Daniel Kutschinski, gives us an inside look at the functioning of a quartet. It is based on Quatuor Ébène, one of the most interesting groups on the current chamber music scene, which the camera follows around on one of its tours of Italy. In addition to seeing the four musicians on stage, “4” takes us behind the scenes and gives us a look at the musical and human process behind the quartet’s performances: the struggle with the scores and the interpretive details, the tensions between the musicians who are both colleagues and friends, and the relationship they each have with their own expectations and frustrations.
