The saxophonist and clarinetist Lluc Casares is one of the most restless Catalan jazz musicians today. Educated at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, he currently resides in New York, where he is part of the prestigious Artist Diploma Ensemble of the Juilliard School of Music under the direction of Wynton Marsalis.
Casares' music is characterized by the combination of two elements that, a priori , may seem antagonistic: composition and improvisation. This is demonstrated in his latest recording Sketches Overseas (Outside In Music, 2018), in which the careful arrangements of the pieces always leave room for the most avant-garde improvisation. Powerful bass lines, percussive chords and well-kept melodies place Casares' music within the aesthetics of the so-called Straight Ahead Jazz.
