The music of Judaism is as diverse and varied as the cultural expressions that form part of its identity. Indissociable from the Exile, liturgical uses and the observance of rabbinic precepts, its heterogeneity is explained by the hybridisation of its own musical practices with those of the non-Jewish host communities. Therefore, the music of Judaism is the music of the diaspora, or galut; a rich variety resulting from an accumulation of complex historical processes that represents one of the pillars of the Jewish identity.

The Jewish community of Barcelona will open the doors of its synagogue –the first one established in Spain after the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century– to share the celebratory songs of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. This festival is one of the most important events in the Jewish calendar and, with the ritual lighting of candles, commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem and the rebellion by the Maccabees against the Seleucid Empire and its Hellenic control.
