Program

Masaaki Suzuki, Director of the Bach Collegium in Japan, is the guest conductor at the Bachcelona Festival, which will include performances by the Salvat Bach Grant soloists, among others. The two cantatas BWV 137 and BWV 119 by Johann Sebastian Bach were written for religious celebrations associated with events of civic and political significance: Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren (Praise the Lord, the Mighty King of Honour), was first performed on 19 August 1725, a few days before the constitution of Leipzig Town Council, which has led some musicologists to suggest that it was used to celebrate the event. Preise Jerusalem, den Herrn (Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem) includes fragments of the Te Deum with texts by Martin Luther, and was composed for the 1723 Leipzig Town Council inauguration. The concert will also feature performances by the Bachcelona Akademie Choir and the Bachcelona Consort, with Daniel Tarrida as organist.
