Program
The Tomàs brothers perform Brahms’ Double Concerto, a unique work in the European repertory that requires maximum rapport between the musicians, and Kazushi Ono brings us Shostakovich’s spectacular Fifth Symphony.Shostakovich was awarded top honours by the Stalinist regime, but he also suffered censorship and public scorn. This contrast that had more to do with politics, however, than with his musical language. Following the criticism he received in 1936, he composed a magnificent symphony; intense and “suitable for the language of the people”. A work with which he “apologised” for his previous “indiscretions”. He would never have imagined it, but he had written one of the best symphonies of the 20th century: The Fifth Symphony led to his reinstatement, a shower of honours and the beginning of a career as a symphonist that would continue to flourish.
