Barcelona Symphonic Band 2023-24 Season

Dicover the new season!

Throughout history, bands have played a part in unifying society in the midst of revolutions and social change, helping people to live in harmony and serving as an example of working for the common good with music as a focus. The artistic and educational roles played by bands still need to be revised and asserted in today’s culture. To this end the Barcelona Symphonic Band has prepared a new season with the support of artists and conductors who include Nacho de Paz, Pilar Jurado, Manel Valdivieso, Björn Bus, Johan de Meij, Andrea Gasperin and Salvador Brotons, our principal guest conductor. We will also enjoy performances by soloists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Sérgio Carolino, Judith Jáuregui, Maria Hinojosa, Juan Manuel Gómez, Blai Gumí, Calefax Reed Quintet, Barcelona Clarinet Players and the Spanish Brass quintet (National Music Award, 2020). Our Retrat d’artista (artist’s portrait) will focus on Dutch conductor Johan de Meij. We will be celebrating the 90th birthday of French musician Ida Gotkovsky, one of the finest composers ever of music for bands, and marking the first centenary of George Gershwin’s mythical Rhapsody in Blue. We have started a partnership with the El Cor Canta project and will be giving the first performances of new works for band by Paquito D’Rivera, Albert Guinovart, Johan de Meij, Pilar Jurado, Jordi Flaquer, Albert Gumí and Pedro Ortiz.

As Catalan poet Joan Margarit said, “Revolutions all end in failure, but we still have to have them”. Our work to establish the power of the band continues in the twenty-first century’s cultural revolution.
