Josep Caballé Domenech is widely regarded as one of Spain’s most esteemed and accomplished conductors. Since 2018, he has held the position of principal conductor for the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra. He recently concluded a twelve-year tenure as the music director of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, where he became the first conductor in the orchestra’s 98-year history to receive the title of “Conductor Laureate”. From 2013 to 2018, he served as the general music director of the Halle Opera House and the Staatskapelle Halle. In 2018, he took on the role of artistic director for the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, and between 2005 and 2007, he served as principal guest conductor for the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
As a guest conductor, Caballé Domenech has headed an impressive array of orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic, with which he recorded Respighi’s Trilogy for the Onyx Classics label, the BBC Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Hr-Sinfonieorchester, Bayerischen Rundfunk, Bamberg Symphony, WDR Sinfonieorchester, DSO Berlin, and the Baltimore, Houston, and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras, among others.
Other recent engagements include débuts at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and the Teatro Real in concert with Bryn Terfel, a collaboration with Lang Lang alongside the Orquesta del Palau de les Arts in Valencia, and a concert with Yo-Yo Ma at the Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s 90th Anniversary Gala. He also conducted Carmen in Puerto Rico, Ariadne auf Naxos in Bogotá, and Lohengrin in Dortmund.
Josep Caballé Domenech was born in Barcelona. In addition to studying piano, percussion, singing and violin, he completed his studies in orchestral conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His mentors include Sergiu Comisiona, Jorma Panula, David Zinman and Sir Colin Davis.
