Winter Journey is Franz Schubert’s most complex, enigmatic and dark lieder series. Written at the end of his short and intense life, it consists of twenty-four songs based on poems by Wilhelm Müller that far exceed the lament for an unhappy love affair and put us in touch with a much deeper and transcendent emotional dimension. Ian Bostridge is one of today’s most applauded performers and takes the stage in the company of composer and conductor Thomas Adès in one of his lesser-known facets: that of pianist.

PROGRAM

Program

The poems, published between 1823 and 1824, express the poet’s feelings as he walks, alone, in winter, in the face of a love story gone wrong with an abrupt, full-of-unknowns ending. Fear, cold, darkness and desolation coexist with moments of joy, all in a musical language that not only imitates or describes the meanings of the text, but also sheds light on it psychologically. Voice and piano inseparably envelop each other to travel the poet’s tortuous and distressing path. Schubert’s Winter Journey is far removed from his traditional melodic, fragile, and sensitive portrait. In it, we delve into the complex and tormented personality of one of the most fascinating figures in nineteenth-century music.
