L’Auditori confirms its commitment to gender equality in orchestras and will be inviting nine ‎women to conduct the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. The programme also includes female ‎composers such as Lili Boulanger, Sofia Gubaidulina, Andrea Tarrodi, Betsy Jolas, Raquel ‎García-Tomás, Mariona Vila and Kaija Saariaho.‎

The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the Vienna, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart symphony ‎orchestras will be visiting L’Auditori with their conductors: Valery Gergiev, Andrés Orozco-‎Estrada, Ádám Fischer and Teodor Currentzis.‎

Audiences will be able to enjoy 430 concerts, 16 world premières, 14 national premières, 17 ‎specially commissioned works and 32 original projects.‎

Joint commissions by international composers, including Thomas Adès and Luca Francesconi, ‎and projects in association with the Bamberg, Gothenburg and Radio France symphony ‎orchestras and Los Angeles Philharmonic. ‎

The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Juanjo Mena will be touring Scandinavia. They will be ‎based alternately at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Stockholm’s Konserthuset.‎

Festival Emergents will be offering a chamber music marathon featuring established and ‎promising talented local and international players.‎



L’Auditori undertakes the second movement of a programme comprising ‎three consecutive seasons based on a single artistic discourse. A musical journey inspired by ‎three stages in the life cycle: genesis (2020-2021 season – Creation), development (2021-2022 ‎season – Love and Hate) and end (2022-2023 season – Death or Return). These three ‎interrelated concepts are the basis for all our programming from September 2020 to July 2023. ‎This season focuses on the concepts of Love and Hate as a driver of passions or the ‎polarisation of opposing energies, like concord and discord for the Greeks, or as a ‎metaphorical basis for exploring other perspectives from the world of harmony. ‎

‎‎

From Mozart to Brahms, Rachmaninoff or Adès, this season symphonic music once ‎again has pride of place at L’Auditori with an emphasis on our heritage and ‎new creative work, featuring names such as Joan Magrané and Bernat ‎Vivancos, the season’s guest composers, and joint commissions with leading ‎international creators, including Thomas Adès and Luca Francesconi.‎

Moreover, musicians like Matthias Pintscher, Ilan Volkov, Thomas Adès, Ian ‎Bostridge, Nicola Benedetti and Denis Kozhukhin will be taking part in more than ‎one project during the season, giving us a fuller picture of each artist.‎
One of the main attractions of this second movement will be the Barcelona ‎Symphony Orchestra’s tour of Scandinavia with conductor extraordinaire ‎Juanjo Mena and cellist Pablo Ferrández, who will visit some of the top European ‎concert halls, such as the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.‎

‎The human heart: driver of passions this season‎
A human heart beating strongly is the iconic image that will represent this second movement: ‎Love and Hate at L’Auditori. The campaign designed by the GAS advertising agency, which ‎won the contest organised by L’Auditori and the FAD last season, takes the form of a trilogy, ‎just like the artistic project. The advertisement for this season shows the diversity of ‎L’Auditori’s audience and the emotions music allows us to experience throughout our lives. It ‎was shot with the ALEXA Mini LF camera, also used for such famous productions as the film ‎‎“1917”, winner of three Oscars, which provides a texture and quality of colour that help to ‎emphasise the emotions of the characters.‎

A diagonal line continues to be an essential graphic element in the new image and has multiple meanings: the crossroads between the wide variety of music and audiences that meet up in L’Auditori and the strategic position of the venue, which stands at the new intersection created by Plaça de les Glòries as a cultural pull factor.

‎L’Auditori: committed to gender equality‎
L’Auditori is one of the European musical institutions doing most to increase the ‎‎presence of female conductors. In the 2021-22 season Barcelona ‎Symphony Orchestra will welcome nine female guest conductors, who will ‎make up 37% of all those appearing. Anja Bihlmaier, Alondra de ‎la Parra, Ruth Reinhardt, Tabita Berglund, Anna-Maria Helsing, Laurence Equilbey, Stephanie ‎Childress, Lina González-Granados and Giedré Šlekytė will be taking the rostrum. ‎

The presence of women composers past and present is also an ‎increasingly common feature of our programming. This can be seen in the inclusion of works ‎by Lili Boulanger, Sofia Gubaidulina, Andrea Tarrodi, Betsy Jolas, Raquel García-‎Tomás, Louise Farrenc, Mariona Vila and Kaija Saariaho, among others. ‎


‎Joan Magrané and Bernat Vivancos, guest composers‎
‎Joan Magrané (Reus, 1988) and Bernat Vivancos ‎‎(Barcelona, 1973) are the guest composers for the next season at L’Auditori. They will be ‎involved in 9 programmes, ranging from Barcelona Symphony Orchestra ‎to Barcelona Symphony Band, taking in the Chamber Music Season and the Llums d’Antiga ‎Festival, offering the premières of some new pieces and performances of earlier works. This ‎season also sees the conclusion of the portrait begun last year of two very distinctive ‎personalities on the international scene: Cassandra Miller and Thomas Adès.‎

Magrané’s presence at L’Auditori includes the presentation in Catalonia of ‎‎Obreda for orchestra, and the first performances of two commissions by the ‎Barcelona Symphony Orchestra with the L’Auditori de Barcelona Choir and the prestigious ‎Graindelavoix ensemble. In the case of Vivancos, the season will feature eight works by the ‎composer, five of them premières, including Organis Aurea, which will be ‎performed by Barcelona Symphony Band and in which Vivancos emulates the sound of the ‎organ. ‎


‎Catalan music will feature in 32 programmes‎
The 2021-2022 season includes thirty-two concerts with works linked to ‎‎Catalonia’s cultural heritage, ranging from historical works to world ‎premières and specially commissioned pieces. ‎

The programme includes a large number of pieces by guest composers Bernat Vivancos and ‎Joan Magrané, but these will also be combined with the work of other composers. ‎‎Nigra es, pulchra sum by Vivancos will be heard with madrigals by Carlo ‎Gesualdo and Magrané’s première with Tenebrae responsoria, also by Gesualdo, ‎in the Música Antiga cycle.‎

The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra’s season includes several premières of works by Catalan ‎composers, including In luce praesenti by Miquel Oliu, Tres amores ‎oscuros (Three dark loves) by Enric Palomar and L’harmonia de les formes ‎‎(The harmony of forms) by Jordi Cervelló. Barcelona Symphony Band, which regularly offers ‎an extensive repertoire of local composers, will be presenting a version of Salvador Brotons’ ‎Concerto for flute, op. 72, for band and Tres paisatges pictòrics (Three pictorial ‎landscapes) for marimba and band by Albert Guinovart. Another noteworthy development is ‎that El amor brujo (The bewitched love) by Manuel de Falla and Don ‎Joan by Richard Strauss will be performed with the historical instrumentation ‎proposed by Joan Lamote de Grignon, revised by resident conductor José R. Pascual-‎Vilaplana.‎


‎Barcelona Symphony Orchestra on tour in Scandinavia with Juanjo Mena and ‎music by Robert Gerhard‎
This season, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra will perform twenty-seven ‎programmes and three concerts in the Mozart Summer Nights. The Orchestra will ‎also go on a six-concert tour of Scandinavia. ‎

Conductors including Pinchas Zukerman, Alondra de la Parra, Ludovic Morlot, Ilan ‎Volkov, Matthias Pintscher, Nuno Coelho and Anja Bihlmaier will be joined by ‎soloists like Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Marco Mezquida, María José Llergo, Patricia ‎Kopatchinskaja, Ian Bostridge, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Pablo Barragán. The ‎season will also include two programmes of solo performances by Barcelona ‎Symphony Orchestra musicians: flautist Francisco López and cellist José ‎Mor. ‎

Regarding our repertoire, Don Quixote by Strauss, ‎‎Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, Daphnis et Chloé by Ravel, ‎‎The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky ‎and Prokofiev, Elgar’s cello concerto and Brahms’s symphonies will appear ‎alongside new works by Luca Francesconi, Thomas Adès, Joan Magrané, Bernat ‎Vivancos, Jordi Cervelló, Enric Palomar, Miquel Oliu and Benet Casablancas. ‎

After its successful tour of Japan, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra will be in ‎Scandinavia from 19 to 26 April 2022. On this occasion they will be under the baton ‎of one of today’s leading Spanish conductors, Juanjo Mena. The Orchestra ‎will travel to Germany, Sweden and Finland, visiting Hamburg, Aarhus, ‎Aalborg, Helsinki, Stockholm and Tampere. They will be accompanied by cellist Pablo ‎Ferrández, who will play the Concerto for cello and orchestra by Saint-‎Saëns and the programme will be completed with Symphonie ‎fantastique by Berlioz and Dances from Don Quixote ‎by Gerhard.‎


‎Rachmaninoff Festival with Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Nikolai Lugansky ‎and Denis Kozhukhin‎
‎2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth and the 80th anniversary of the death of Sergei ‎Rachmaninoff, one of the key figures of Russian and western music. Barcelona Symphony ‎Orchestra are anticipating the event with a Rachmaninoff Festival, which ‎will review the composer’s great symphonies and works for the piano.‎

From 4 March to 5 April 2022, the Festival will give audiences the chance to ‎hear all the piano concertos played by Denis Kozhukhin ‎with Matthias Pintscher and Kazushi Ono conducting. The Barcelona ‎Symphony Orchestra will also perform Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic ‎Dances. During the Festival, pianist Nikolai Lugansky will ‎be in Hall 2 performing the composer’s Preludes and his ‎‎Études-Tableaux a major work in Russian music. ‎


‎Mozart Summer Nights‎
For the second year running Barcelona Symphony Orchestra is joined by today’s finest ‎performers and conductors of Mozart’s music, from both this country and abroad, to explore ‎Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music.‎

Mozart Summer Nights will offer three programmes between 30 June and 16 ‎July with three conductors whose work with this repertoire is outstanding, ‎combining the experience and international reputation of Trevor Pinnock ‎and Laurence Equilbey with the innovative approach of Dani ‎Espasa. ‎

They are joined by three established soloists: cellist Kian Soltani, violinist Nicola ‎Benedetti and renowned soprano Patricia Petibon. Music by Mozart, ‎Haydn, Farrenc, Baguer, Gluck and Thomas Adès will fill summer in Barcelona with ‎concerts in Hall 1 Pau Casals at L’Auditori and the Palau de la Música ‎Catalana.‎


‎International orchestras: Mariinsky, Vienna, Düsseldorf and Kissin‎
The International Orchestra cycle at L’Auditori is undeniably one of the highlights of classical ‎music in Barcelona, thanks to the combined efforts of L’Auditori, Ibercamera and BCN Classics. ‎

During the 21-22 season Hall 1 Pau Casals will host performances by leading European ‎orchestras including The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the ‎‎Vienna, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart symphony orchestras with their ‎conductors: Valéry Gergiev, Teodor Currentzis, Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Ádám ‎Fischer. Outstanding pianists Eugeny Kissin and András Schiff will also be returning ‎to L’Auditori for solo performances.‎

The works played by these performers will also centre on the love-hate duality, with intense ‎pieces such as Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, Mahler’s Fifth and A Hero’s ‎Life by Strauss. ‎


‎Performances by Barcelona Symphony Band will feature highlights of our ‎musical heritage and selected new works‎
‎Barcelona Symphony Band will be offering twenty-six ‎programmes centring on the love-hate theme and highlighting areas of interest on ‎which it has already been working: emphasising the potential of wind and percussion, ‎recovering, promoting and adapting our musical heritage, publicising the modern repertoire ‎for bands and performing with international conductors and soloists.‎

The ensemble headed by Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana will offer a repertoire ‎ranging from Falla to Bernstein, from Berlioz to Prokofiev and from Wagner to ‎Schoenberg. ‎

Like the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Band will also offer a selection ‎of such established works as Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of ‎Paganini, Bernstein’s West Side Story, El amor brujo (The ‎bewitched love) by Falla, the zarzuela Cançó d’amor i de guerra (Song of love ‎and war) by Martínez Valls and Elgar’s cello concerto. The programme will also ‎include work by a series of composers with strong links to music for bands, including ‎‎Husa, Reed, Valero-Castells, Brotons and Sparke, who will appear as part ‎of the Artist’s Portrait series and will conduct the première of a new work. ‎The band will also give the first performances of works by L’Auditori guest composer ‎Bernat Vivancos and by Albert Guinovart. ‎

As well as resident conductor José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana and Deputy Director ‎‎Carlos Ramón, a number of distinguished conductors will be appearing ‎with the Band, including Philip Sparke, Josep Caballé, Henrie Adams, Baldur ‎Brönnimann, Juan Miguel Romero and Salvador Brotons. ‎

Soloists performing with the Band include cellist Asier Polo, marimba player Conrado ‎Moya, pianist Jean-François Dichamp, trombonists Polina Tarasenko and Ivan Plaus, soprano ‎Miren de Miguel and baritone Toni Marsol. ‎


‎Música Antiga with Savall, Koopman, Rial and Sabata‎
The Música Antiga season at L’Auditori is also centred on the love-hate ‎duality and reflects local and international trends in the interpretation of the great masters of ‎the past. Dotze cites will present this repertoire as part of the Música ‎Antiga cycle and also in Festival Llums d’Antiga and Festival Emergents Barcelona. ‎

The presence of Jordi Savall will, once again, be fundamental, with the ‎continuation of his cycle of all Beethoven’s symphonies, the Sixth and ‎Seventh this season, and his interpretation of Mozart’s ‎‎Requiem. Conductor and harpsichord player Dani Espasa and ‎Vespres d’Arnadí will offer us Handel’s Amadigi di ‎Gaula with the voices of Xavier Sabata and Núria Rial. ‎‎Ton Koopman, a key figure in the recovery of historical works, will appear ‎at L’Auditori as part of Festival Bachcelona. During Festival ‎Emergents, audiences will be able to enjoy performances by the Jove ‎Capella Reial de Catalunya, recorder player Lucie Horsch and lute player ‎Thomas Dunford. ‎

The concerts devoted to this music will allow audiences to gain a fuller knowledge of Spanish ‎polyphony, special attention being paid to the captivating and fascinating work of Gesualdo, ‎and taking in the masters of French and German cantata, the chamber duets of the ‎influential and incredibly accomplished Steffani, the laments and instrumental follies of the ‎great European tradition of improvisation and fantasy, culminating in two of Mozart’s most ‎important liturgical works, his Requiem and the sublime unfinished Great ‎Mass in C minor. ‎

‎Gesualdo’s music highlighted in Llums d’Antiga‎
With six concerts, the fourth edition of Llums d’Antiga ‎will be divided between three of Barcelona’s most fascinating mediaeval buildings: ‎‎Santa Àgata Chapel, Santa Maria del Pi Basilica and Sant Pau del Camp ‎Monastery. ‎

Two of the concerts will feature music by composer Carlo Gesualdo, ‎performed by two of today’s leading vocal ensembles: Exaudi Vocal Ensemble and ‎Graindelavoix. ‎

‎La Grande Chapelle by Albert Recasens will open the Festival and ‎‎Jordi Savall will explore the art of variation and improvisation in ‎seventeenth-century European chamber music. Le Consort, with ‎‎soprano Emmanuelle de Negri, will take audiences on a journey through ‎the melodies of the French Baroque. Finally the Zapico brothers, Forma ‎Antiqva, will perform duets by Steffani, accompanied by countertenor ‎Carlos Mena and soprano Eugenia Boix. ‎


‎A chamber music marathon with Emergents artists‎
The Chamber Music season begins with a tribute to Robert Gerhard i ‎Ottenwaelder. The Gerhard Year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth ‎of one of the most important Catalan and European composers of the twentieth century. ‎The programme includes vocal music by the composer from Valls with the voices of ‎‎soprano Maria Hinojosa and mezzo-soprano Anna Alàs.‎

‎Winterreise by Franz Schubert, with Ian Bostridge ‎and Thomas Adès, will offer us another side of these two artists who will also be ‎performing with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra this season.‎

Leading performers such as Janine Jansen and Nikolai Lugansky will offer ‎audiences selected pieces from the Romantic repertoire with incursions into the twentieth ‎century, ranging from Brahms to Rihm and from Schubert to Rachmaninoff. String quartets ‎return to the programme with the Hanson and Casals Quartets as ‎conventional quartets or extended to quintet and double quartet formats. This formation will ‎also be presenting one of the season’s highlights: a one-day chamber music ‎marathon as part of Festival Emergents. An authentic musical banquet for ‎audiences to discover local and international talent. The festival goes through the classical ‎repertoire, without neglecting contemporary work with national premières of works ‎by Mark Simpson and Tebogo Monnakgotla. The chamber music season will pay ‎special attention to women composers from different periods, including Jane ‎Vignery, Sofia Gubaidulina, Clara Schumann, Alma Mahler, Ilse Weber, Matilde Salvador, ‎Pauline Viardot and Mariona Vila.‎

Choral music will also be part of the programme, with two concerts by Cor VEUS dels ‎Amics de la Unió and L’Auditori de Barcelona Choir, respectively. We will also be ‎able to enjoy the outcome of joint projects by L’Auditori and various other organisations, ‎including the Joan Manén Association, Young Musicians of Catalonia‎, the ECHO (European ‎Concert Hall Organisation) Rising Stars cycle and the Maria Canals International Music ‎Competition. ‎


‎ L’Auditori de Barcelona Choir comes into being‎
This season sees the creation of L’Auditori de Barcelona Choir, a new ‎element in L’Auditori’s extensive structure which will contribute to Catalonia’s rich choral ‎tradition. The choir will make it possible to undertake symphonic and choral productions at ‎the highest level, working with other leading choirs in the city. ‎

The new group, conducted by Xavier Pastrana, is a professional choir that ‎will be taking part in three concerts in the 2021-2022 season; two with Barcelona Symphony ‎Orchestra and an a cappella concert. With Barcelona Symphony Orchestra it will ‎present the world première of a new commission by the season’s guest ‎composer Joan Magrané. It will also perform The ‎Plague, a mature work by Robert Gerhard, based on the novel by Albert ‎Camus and dealing with a theme that affects us greatly in these times. Actor Pere ‎Arquillué will provide the narrative for the piece. The programme for ‎unaccompanied voice will feature choral works by Manuel Oltra and the ‎centenary of his birth will be celebrated with a digital recording released on the L’Auditori ‎label. ‎


‎Sampler Sèries: new, cutting-edge creative work‎
The Sampler Sèries cycle presents thirteen concerts in ‎a bold journey through the dense jungle of sound. It is a setting in which the relationship ‎between production and reproduction collapses, the border between reading and writing is ‎blurred and the composition always has a dramatic impact on our ears. ‎

From the spiral spaces of Plus Minus (1963) by Karlheinz ‎Stockhausen to the memory scaling and writing in vinyl of Philip Jeck and ‎Otomo Yoshihide, the appropriation, absorption, borrowing and reintegration of ‎material is combined with the projection of tensely balanced architecture subject to ‎opposing and complementary forces. ‎

The technical options for reproduction broaden the horizon of possible coordinates and allow ‎a deconstruction of traditional narrative, as achieved by Bernhard Lang via ‎a film montage in Monadologie XVIII, and Cassandra ‎Miller with her use of recordings. ‎
Approaches to sound reproduction are also reflected in the revised concept of variation ‎proposed by John McGuire in 48 Variations for two pianos ‎and in Ferran Fages’ acoustic exploration of the electric guitar. ‎


‎Sit Back: a chance to enjoy the best acoustics‎
The Sit Back cycle presents nine concerts during the 21-22 season. The ‎duo Kings of Convenience will open the season with songs from their ‎long-awaited fifth studio recording. Pol Batlle and Rita Payés will present ‎their joint project in Barcelona. Jon Hopkins will unveil his most recent ‎work, Polarity, which combines the more fragile and more ‎severe sides of the artist. Pau Vallvé will conclude his La vida és ‎ara (Life is now) tour. This is the last album produced by the talented multi-‎instrumentalist and here, relying only on his voice, guitar and drum machine, he brings out ‎the mature, plethoric quality of the work. ‎

‎Miquel Serra i amics is a celebration of emerging and consolidated talent ‎in the Balearics, which will review the Ibizan musician’s repertoire of songs and his latest ‎recording Cançons de Joan Serra (Songs by Joan Serra), which features ‎compositions by his brother. Coros de medianoche, led by Enric ‎Montefusco focuses on popular song and features various artists he admires: ‎‎Niño de Elche, Albert Pla, Maria Arnal, Nacho Vegas and Los Hermanos ‎Cubero.‎
The cycle will conclude with the staging of the Amor Odi project ‎‎Radioshow, a live radio programme jointly directed by women. ‎Alternating interviews with performances by a band created for this special occasion, it will ‎invite listeners to think about and discuss the love-hate dichotomy and the way in which the ‎theme has been dealt with throughout the history of modern music.‎

‎The Sit Back cycle enjoys the support of Primavera Sound, Radio Primavera Sound, ‎Cruïlla and Vida Records & Friends. ‎


‎Sessions, a space for improvised music‎
‎Sessions also reflects the theme of love and hate that runs through the ‎‎21-22 season. The love that stems from admiration can be seen in the revision by ‎‎jazz pianist Xavi Torres of some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‎sonatas for trios. Admiration is also the basis of Suite ‎Lucía, a show with which L’Auditori and Ciutat Flamenco pay tribute ‎to Paco de Lucía, featuring Joan Albert Amargós and a big band formed by students ‎from the Taller de Músics and Catalonia College of Music. ‎

This season Sessions once again invite us to discover new local and international talent. ‎‎Guitarist Mary Halvorson, one of the most interesting performers on the ‎New York jazz scene, will present a daring experiment in song, entitled Code ‎Girl. Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan will offer us a ‎lively view of jazz which blends improvisation, folk, electronic music and progressive ‎rock .‎

‎Barcelona-born pianist and singer Lucia Fumero, who has a musical ‎background in folk, jazz and classical music, gives free rein to her creativity in her own ‎personal approach to a universal view in her début project. The Catalonia College of ‎Music Jazz Project looks inward to celebrate the institution’s twentieth anniversary ‎and showcases the talent developed in the school with the assistance of directors Francesc ‎Capella, Joan Díaz, Joan Monné, Joan Sanmartí and Lluís Vidal. ‎

The view of love depicted by flamenco singer Israel Fernández is more ‎problematic, as his songs are full of pain, loss and despair. For their part, the duo ‎‎Tarta Relena present a scenario full of subtle shades, in which they can ‎just as easily embrace as tie themselves into knots. ‎

On a local level, we will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by three jazz ensembles ‎that have recently emerged from higher schools of music in Catalonia. They are the ‎‎Toni Mora Big Babo from Catalonia College of Music, Ernest Pipó Negro Spirituals ‎from Taller de Músics and the winners of the Extraordinary Prize for Jazz and Modern Music ‎awarded by the Conservatori Superior del Liceu each year to some of its ‎outstanding students. ‎


‎Escenes: three projects for dialogue between music and dramatic ‎art‎
‎Escenes is programme designed by L’Auditori to encourage dialogue ‎between live music and the dramatic arts. This year we can see three ‎proposals, beginning with the FRAMES Percussion group and ‎‎dancer and choreographer Albert Quesada. They come together in a ‎project for six musicians and three dancers, based on the piece “Timber” ‎‎(2009), by Michael Gordon. The experiment includes dance performed ‎very close to the audience and sound amplification with a 3D audio system that allows us to ‎appreciate the subtle, delicate changes in the work.‎

Another joint project is that involving director and mediaturgist Sara Serrano, actor ‎and creator David Climent (loscorderos.sc), musician and performer Adriano Galante (Seward) ‎and architect and designer Alessia Schoor. Together they produce ‎‎“Demoledora” (Demolishing), a piece that combines four artistic ‎perspectives (movement, mediaturgy, architecture and sound) to explore the theme of ‎decent and sub-standard housing. ‎

Finally, we will see who joins Clara Aguilar in her constant research into ‎sound to reflect on the theme of love and hate.‎


‎Festival Emergents, today’s best talent‎
After five years, Festival Emergents Barcelona has become established ‎not only as a key event for us to discover some of the best emerging talent, but also as a ‎milestone in the artistic and professional development of the musicians taking part. ‎

Once again, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Barcelona Symphony Band invite musicians ‎who are beginning their international careers to make their first appearances with them. ‎‎Barcelona Symphony Orchestra will be headed by the young ‎‎Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra, one of today’s outstanding ‎performers, who will direct American pianist Eric Lu and Alejandro Gómez Pareja, ‎the cellist from Madrid. Barcelona Symphony Band, for its part, ‎will have trombonists Polina Tarasenko and Iván Plaus as guest ‎performers. ‎

This year choral music will again benefit from the participation of two of ‎the country’s leading young choirs. The National Youth Choir of Catalonia, ‎directed by Pere Lluís Biosca, will take on a repertoire of music by Catalan ‎composers Mariona Vila, Joan Magrané and Bernat ‎Vivancos, while the Jove Capella Reial de Catalunya, the choir ‎whose studies focus on historical music, directed by Jordi Savall and Lluís Vilamajó, will ‎perform the monumental cycle Membra Jesu Nostri by Baroque ‎composer Dietrich Buxtehude. ‎

As part of the series of concerts promoted by the European Concert Hall ‎Organisation, L’Auditori will host three recitals by solo artists ‎with accompanists, each of them the première of a work commissioned by the Organisation. ‎The concerts will feature violinist Johan Dalene, who will give the first ‎performance of a work by Tebogo Monnakgotla; recorder player Lucie ‎Horsch, who will offer a piece by Lotta Wennäkoski; and trumpeter Ben ‎Goldscheider, who will play works by Mark Simpson and Catalan composer Guillem ‎Palomar. ‎

Artists discovered as a result of cooperation between L’Auditori and other musical ‎institutions in Catalonia will also be appearing at Festival Emergents. The first, from Young ‎Musicians of Catalonia‎, are soprano Mireia Tarragó and pianist ‎Eudald Buch. The Maria Canals International Music Competition will present the ‎winner of the 2019 edition, pianist Daumants Liepiņš. Finally, the schools ‎of music invite us to discover some of the new jazz ensembles that have emerged from their ‎classrooms: the Toni Mora Big Babo from Catalonia College of Music, Ernest Pipó ‎Negro Spirituals from Taller de Músics and the winners of the Extraordinary Prize for Jazz and ‎Modern Music awarded by the Conservatori Superior del Liceu. ‎


‎L’Auditori’s educational and social project: 20 years revolutionising the music ‎scene for schools and families‎
‎L’Auditori’s educational project marks its twentieth anniversary with a ‎renewed commitment to creation, cooperation and learning in a comprehensive programme ‎aimed at a wide public.‎

This season sees the première of the new Tutti fan piu event, with music ‎ranging from Tchaikovsky to The Beatles. The programme also includes old favourites from ‎L’Auditori such as Ma, me, mi…Mozart!, Pica-So, Händel & Friends and Planeta ‎Clarinet plus other attractions introduced in recent seasons, like Ullsclucs ‎and Out of the [Cage], which put traditional and contemporary music in the ‎spotlight. ‎

An extensive programme designed for children of different ages, which this season includes ‎the new Tot plegat feature, together with workshops and two large-scale vocal projects: ‎‎Cantània and Canta Gran. ‎


‎Apropa Cultura, 15 years of music and inclusiveness‎
‎Apropa Cultura is an initiative of L’Auditori which fifteen ‎years ago opened all its programmes to people in situations of vulnerability, leading ‎to impressive results and experiences. For many people it means sharing the experience of a ‎concert with the usual audience for the first time. The consequence is an inclusive, ‎rehabilitating experience, as these people are often marginalised in our society.‎

L’Auditori’s vocation, as a public facility at the service of the country, has made it possible to ‎make all this experience and knowledge available to other cultural programmers in Catalonia, ‎thus ensuring that people in social organisations all over the country can benefit. Currently ‎over 400 public and private programmers and nearly 1,000 organisations are part of the ‎apropacultura.cat network.‎

Apropa Cultura will devote the 2021-2022 season to older people who are isolated or ‎dependent on others. It will work to design programmes in line with their needs and to make ‎culture and music more accessible. ‎


‎L’Auditori Digital: a catalogue of nearly 100 concerts‎
‎L’Auditori Digital, L’Auditori’s online platform, is an audiovisual space, ‎which, in less than a year, has brought some sixty concerts to TV, mobile phones and tablets ‎in all five continents withover 3,500 subscribers.‎

Thanks to L’Auditori Digital, a generous sample of L’Auditori’s work is made available in ‎countries such as New Zealand, France, the United States and Japan, to ‎name but a few, giving a global dimension to an artistic project based in Barcelona. The ‎network also acquaints subscribers with the composers and artists forming part of the ‎Catalan musical heritage and commissions and new work first performed at L’Auditori. As ‎well as crossing international borders, digital technology has allowed us to break through ‎other barriers that are closer to home, and has provided a tool that facilitates access to ‎L’Auditori and its activities. Schools have thus been able to organise educational projects in ‎the classroom via the platform, and to complement learning with all the teaching material ‎‎(scores, choreography, tutorials, etc.) available via the channel, while people who have ‎difficulty travelling or are convalescing have been able to enjoy live music, albeit remotely.‎

During the 21-22 season some thirty concerts will be streamed ‎and subsequently added to the L’Auditori Digital catalogue, which will contain nearly ‎a hundred videos by the end of the season. ‎

At the same time, via the platform, the L’Auditori recording label makes ‎the studio recordings made on site available to a wider audience. They include performances ‎by Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Barcelona Symphony Band and albums from the ‎Educational Project, Museu de la Música and other programmes at L’Auditori.‎


‎75th anniversary of the Museu de la Música‎
‎Barcelona’s Museu de la Música celebrates its 75th birthday in 2021. Over ‎five hundred instruments in the permanent collection, from a total of 3,000, take us on a ‎journey through the properties of sound and the history of music. The sounds of the ‎Museum can be heard in audiovisual exhibits and in various other activities and concerts. ‎Visitors are not only involved as listeners, they participate actively: discovering the Museum’s ‎collection of guitars with an interactive table, playing instruments or taking the baton for a ‎day in the new kinetic installation Conduct Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Conduct ‎Barcelona Symphony Band.‎

Years of research, restoration and carefully chosen acquisitions have made it possible to ‎relive the sound of the instruments in the collection. Small, intimate cycles of concerts and ‎rehearsals with commentaries introduce us to music from widely differing periods and places, ‎from eighteenth-century convent music with the Pérez Molero organ to twenty-first century ‎Barcelona and the Steinway piano. In addition to the concerts and rehearsals that are open to ‎the public, recent recordings by well-known players of the sound of the Zell harpsichord and ‎the Barak Norman viola da gamba are also available. The Museum also offers programmes for ‎families, works on collaborations with Catalonia College of Music and on social media, records ‎videos during concerts, lists recordings that can be heard in the permanent exhibition and ‎other content providing different viewpoints on the collections.‎

The relationship between music and nature on the island of New Guinea and ‎Barcelona violinist Joan Manén are featured in the season’s two special exhibitions, ‎plus the exhibition devoted to the Pau Casals Orchestra, which has been extended until ‎January. ‎
