Program
It is romantic because it ignites passions; it goes straight to the heart and inspires love. In Romanticism, music became the perfect language with which to give free rein to feelings, bursts of energy and life. As an example, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony offer up passions which are unleashed from the very first bar.Max Bruch achieved overwhelming success with his Violin Concerto No. 1. It is a virtuoso work, full of intensity and as attractive now as it was 150 years ago, when it was premiered. Schumann always hesitated about composing for an orchestra, but when he finally did it – encouraged by his wife, the pianist Clara Wieckz – no one could stop him. The success of his Symphony No. 3 was immediate and, due to the inclusion of popular elements and the fact that it premiered in Düsseldorf (through which the Rhine passes), it soon came to be known as the Rhenish Symphony. Cheerful, lively and with a surprising ending, it is undoubtedly the most popular of the composer’s works.
