Program

The Emergents Festival dedicates a day to the string quartet, the iconic chamber music ‎ensemble. In this edition, we will be visited by the Rolston String Quartet, one of the most ‎outstanding ensembles from Canada and winner of prizes such as the Banff International ‎String Quartet Competition and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition ‎‎(2016); the Simply Quartet, winner of the Shanghai Chamber Music Competition (2009), ‎Beijing International String Quartet Competition (2011) and the Joseph Haydn Chamber ‎Music Competition (2016); and the Quatuor Arod, ECHO Rising Stars ensemble 2018-2019 and ‎BBC New Generation Artists 2017-2019, plus winner of the Carl Nielsen International ‎Chamber Music Competition (2015) and the prestigious ARD International Music Competition ‎in Munich (2016). The day’s programme will be linked by the performance of the three ‎‎‘Razumovsky’ String Quartets, Op. 59, masterworks in their genre, with which ‎Ludwig van Beethoven expanded the classical form of the quartet by developing a more ‎complex narrative, broadening the emotional range. Each of the programmes will be ‎rounded off with works by contemporary composers associated with quartets: Quartet No. 1 ‎by Zosha Di Castri, composed for the Banff International String Quartet Competition; Scent ‎Dance, by He Xuntian, written for the final of the Beijing International String Quartet ‎Competition; and the work by young French composer Benjamin Attahir, commissioned by ‎the ECHO.‎
