Roger Padullés and Josep Surinyach help us explore one of the lesser-known aspects of Juli Garreta’s music: lyrical song. The great Sardana symphonist cultivated this genre extensively during the early years of his artistic career, between 1900 and 1907 approximately.
Along with the models of the German lied and the French song, the Catalan art song offered an intimate, deep space, and at the same time accessible, with recitals held in athenaeums, casinos, private salons, and concert halls where the music of Mendelssohn, Fauré and Schubert was often played alongside the music of Garreta, Morera and Pahissa, always under the same lieder label.
Garreta’s songs won awards and recognition and were performed by established singers, but quickly disappeared from the repertoire and were not even recorded, barring a few exceptions. Today's concert will bring them back to life, accompanied by the lieder of Mendelssohn, Schubert, Grieg and Strauss who inspired them.
