Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony is the most popular of the Russian composer’s 15 symphonies and one of the most performed symphonic works of the 20th century in the world. Its premiere in 1937 received a 40-minute ovation and served to restore Shostakovich's standing following the criticism he had faced from the Soviet regime for making music that was “alienated from the people”.
