Programme

GUSTAV MAHLER : Symphony no. 2 in C m Auferstehung (Resurrection) (1888-94; rev. 1903) 80′

In the colossal symphony Resurrection , Gustav Mahler starts from the vast orchestral ensemble used in Titan to expand it with the introduction of the human voice, with the use of soloists and chorus, a feature that will be characteristic of his later symphonies. It is also the first work in which Mahler uses texts from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn: Alte deutsche Lieder (The Magic Horn of Youth: Old German Songs), a set of traditional German poems and songs compiled in 1805 and which it became an inexhaustible source of resources for its production.

The symphony was initially conceived as a one-movement symphonic poem of a funereal nature. Later, and after the death of the conductor Hans von Bülow, the composer introduced four more movements to erect a monumental symphonic construction about death, the memory of happiness, the loss and recovery of faith and, finally, resurrection through love in the hands of God.
