Program
Mozart and Haydn eclipsed the other composers of the Classical period; between them they share the glory bestowed by posterity. Jan Willem de Vriend is an expert in this period and he will be providing us with the authentic classical sound in three masterpieces. This will be the first of two visits that the main guest conductor of the OBC will be making this season. De Vriend specialises in recreating the musical sounds of the 18th century with modern orchestras, and the OBC did not want to miss the opportunity to incorporate his musical ideas when tackling this repertoire. Towards the end of his life, Haydn travelled to London, where he had experienced many successes: it was there that he wrote the last 12 symphonies, of which the penultimate is the best known, despite its second movement having to be repeated on the day of its premiere. Among the dozens of masterpieces by Mozart, there is nothing better than a piano concert – composed at the age of 21 – and the opening of the opera buffa with which he won over Vienna.
