Sorcery and mystery, gypsies murmuring spells, and dancing around the fire. El amor brujo is a tale of passion that goes beyond the living world into the afterlife. The main protagonists of this ballet pantomime are Candelas and Carmelo, plus a former lover of Candelas whose ghost torments her. Incantations, witchcraft and traditional Andalusian music all combine to make this a particularly appealing work. The “Danza ritual del fuego” (“Ritual fire dance”) or “Canción del fuego fatuo” (“Song of the will-o’-the-wisp”) have become landmarks in 20th century music.
PROGRAMWhen we are in love, our heart races and that pounding betrays us. In Caridiofonía, Andrés Valero-Castells offers a musical experience based on the rhythm of this organ, literally in the first and third movements. The second more poetic one starts with a quote by García Lorca, while the last movement closes the work with a theme by rock musician Luis Campuzano, a.k.a. Sherpa. The concert will conclude with Smetana fanfare by Karel Husa to mark the centenary of the Czech composer’s birth.
