Claudio Monteverdi’s Sixth Book of Madrigals includes the Sestina, with the subtitle “Lagrime d’amante al sepolcro dell’amata”, one of the most captivating pieces not only in the composer’s catalogue but in the entire history of music.

DOWNLOAD THE LYRICS HEREIt was composed during a time marked by loss and death – first, that of his wife Claudia Cattaneo, and later that of his favourite pupil, the young soprano Caterina Martinelli – which definitively affected his work and music, making it desolate, intimate, reflective and stark (but without undue drama), sounding and advancing in dissonant steps with a subtle game of imitative counterpoint on a painful and repetitive text – a grave and tears, the earth and the sky – while telling the story of Glauco’s arrival at the grave of Corinna, his unfortunate lover. It is surrounded by no less intense and expressive works, real expressions of affection, by Luca Marenzio, Carlo Gesualdo and Giaches de Wert.
