Program

Astronomer, scientist, humanist and patron Rafael Patxot i Jubert (Sant Feliu de Guíxols 1872 – Geneva 1964), from the region of Empordà, was a man with a profound sense of service and commitment to Catalonia. These values and his patronage have enabled a wide variety of initiatives to be undertaken, especially those of a cultural nature.

One of the largest projects financed by Rafael Patxot was the Obra del Cançoner Popular de Catalunya (1922-1936), a collection of popular songs from Catalonia, an immense musical corpus which, with a vision of the future and going far beyond song itself, brought together –and brings together– legends, dances, games, fairy tales, studies about song, entreméses, refrains, etc. One of the aims of this magnum opus, in Rafael Patxot’s own words, was “to reach a synthesis that revealed the true value of the Catalan musical spirit”, and also to conduct “a critical study of song itself”.
