Program

This programme focuses primarily on the work of 17th-century composers who were able to pursue their careers as a result of more favourable circumstances that were until fairly recently considered “normal”: being born to a family devoted to music (as in the case of Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi) or to a noble family (as in the case of Isabella Leonarda) or having entered a religious institution (as in the case of Claudia Sessa and also Leonarda).

DOWNLOAD THE LYRICS HERESave for the compositions of Strozzi, who was also a famous singer, it is hard to see how their music was included in programmes and valued as it deserved. We will also listen to the music of the almost unknown Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde, a bassoon virtuoso born in Cuenca who was linked to the House of Habsburg and its chapel for years and years. He spent time in Rome, Venice – where he met Dario Castello, another master of reductions and of the art of embellishing songs and motets – and Innsbruck.
