As with Requiem, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Great Mass in C minor was unfinished at the time of his death. In the imperial Vienna of Joseph II, opportunities to perform a large liturgical work were rare, and it was possibly for this reason that the composer set aside the completion of Mass in order to devote himself to composing other works that could guarantee his livelihood.

Program

The complete manuscripts of the Kyrie and the Gloria, and part of the Credo, have been preserved along with some drafts of the last numbers which, in the composer’s time, were replaced by parts of previous masses. Here, Mozart’s genius is combined with admiration for German Baroque music and, in particular, for Händel’s oratorios, of which Mozart was a connoisseur. With the characteristics of the Missa Solemni and arias of great operatic flight, the Great Mass is one of the pinnacles of the classical style.

If Classicism in Catalonia has a name, it is that of Carles Baguer. Composer and organist of the cathedral of Barcelona at the turn of the 18th century, his symphonic contribution –highly influenced by Haydn's music– is unique in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula.
