The specialist press is hailing Grandelavoix as an outstanding new early music group. Based in Antwerp and conducted by the group’s founder, Björn Schmelzer, it offers an unusual programme which takes us away from well-trodden paths and conventional repertoires to explore music stemming from ancient Christian mysticism and traditional veneration for the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene.

We have a rare opportunity to hear the works of one of the greatest and most original creative minds of all time, Benedictine mystic Hildegard von Bingen, composer, poet, illustrator and scientist, and those of lesser-known composer Hadewijch of Antwerp, Beguine and poet, and other anonymous composers from the same era: the seemingly obscure twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
