The collaboration between the OBC and the Mariïnsky orchestra three years ago resulted in one of the biggest successes that L’Auditori has ever seen. We still remember the more than 10 minutes of applause and shouts of “Bravo!” that Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony unleashed. This year, Valery Gergiev seeks to repeat the experience with another monumental work: An Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss. As the critics commented three years ago: “These challenges are only within the reach of someone with the charisma and energy of the Russian maestro, with the ability to combine the synergies of the musicians.”The icing on the cake will be young South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the Tchaikovsky, Rubinstein and Chopin competitions. He’ll be making his debut at L’Auditori with Liszt’s Second Symphony, a mature work which the composer himself dubbed a “symphonic concerto” owing to the constant transformation of the themes he uses and the incorporation of the solo instrument in the orchestra.
