A great concert played by one of the great soloists of our time. Gautier Capuçon takes on Dvorák’s Cello Concerto in a programme completed with a premiere by our resident composer and the stunning Fifth Symphony by Sergei Prokofiev.When Brahms saw the score of Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, he exclaimed: “If I had known it was possible to create a concerto like that, I would have composed it a long time ago!” Dvorák composed it during the last few weeks of his sojourn in the United States, shortly before returning to the homeland he missed. It premiered exactly 120 years ago and from the very first moment it was considered an indispensable work. Prokofiev composed his Fifth Symphony while the Red Army was expelling the Germans from Russia. According to the composer himself: “It is a hymn to the free and happy man, his strength, his
generosity and the purity of his soul.” It is the most magnificent symphony he composed and, in his own view too, his best work.
