Program

Closer to the Ground is a studio album recorded in 2018 by the Fred Frith Trio, a ‎group from Francisco specialising in experimental music and free improvisation. This is the ‎group's second album, recorded in Oakland, California, in January 2018 and released by Intakt ‎Records in September 2018 in Switzerland. The group's first album, which came out in 2016, ‎was entitled Another Day in Fucking Paradise.‎
In its second album, featuring Jason Hoopes (bass) and Jordan Glenn (drums), the Fred Frith ‎Trio continues to explore the scope of the guitar trio. Closer to the Ground is all ‎about sound, mood, texture, ideas and atmosphere. This playful, intimate, closely knit trio ‎focuses above all on the action of listening. Since this is also Fred Frith's touring band, the ‎themes were also tested out live and so even in its creative highpoints, the trio remains ‎dense and tight. ‎

“The music (of Closer to the Ground) is hard to classify or to pigeonhole ‎‎(luckily!): it is not jazz, not rock, not fusion, not noise either. It is something else: wayward, ‎stubborn, recalcitrant, unpredictable, uncompromising, performed by three musicians who take ‎their instruments beyond the boundaries of conventions to create something new and fascinating."‎
