Programme
Schumann’s piano concerto, one of the most iconic works of Romanticism, will be performed by Dezsö Ránki under the baton of seasoned violinist Leonidas Kavakos, who is also a renowned conductor. At the heart of the piece is the soloist, facing threatening forces without weakening, and even creating the conditions for a lyrical interval in its slow-moving introduction. The personality of the German composer radiates from start to finish, in an emotionally intense work.
Symphony No 15 by Dmitri Shostakovich is much more playful, often quoting Rossini’s popular, fast-paced William Tell overture. A work in four movements of unequal force, it premièred in 1972 under the baton of the composer’s son, alternating a wonderful orchestral strepitoso with the delicately agile beats of the percussion that disappear into silence.
