Programme

Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony is a dynamic work with the pertinent, charming touches yet particularly expansive in its first and last movements, labelled allegro con spirito and presto. Harnessing the energy, in a fascinating transformation, will play a huge role in the symphony programmed for the second half, as its posthumous name suggests. Schubert’s Ninth, completed in 1826 but never performed during the composer’s lifetime, is a supreme work in terms of both extension and of the quantity of orchestral resources involved. The finale even dares to pay honour -discreetly yet quite clearly- to the theme of another great Ninth, completed by Beethoven just a couple of years beforehand. The violin concerto of a composer that Igor Stravinsky was quick to praise can be discovered between two top-class symphonic works. A piece that does not lose sight of the major contributions to the genre, but that stands with its own language, as performed this time by Sergei Dogadin with conductor Juanjo Mena leading the OBC.
